When billboard and other OOH advertising is created successfully, they have the desired effect of becoming a part of a city’s visual landscape. Our billboard and OOH designers have learned the simple rules behind creating the most effective OOH ads. Our creative billboard design and OOH services can take your advertising further than you ever realized.
Creating Effective Outdoor
The perfect OOH ad contains three basic elements:
- an image or graphic
- a copy line
- a company name or logo
The purpose of the image is to grab the viewer’s attention and make them look at the ad. The copy line describes the product, service or message being advertised. Lastly the logo or company name lets the viewer know where to get the product or service. The mistake many make is trying to cram too much on the billboard design that should be left for websites, mailers and brochures.
- Copy: The average viewable time of a bulletin is about 7 seconds. Remember, no one can pull their eyes off of the road and focus on your ad for the full 7 seconds. We try to keep copy to around 9, very effective words.
- Typefaces: Readability is another key factor in good outdoor ads. We never use overly ornate or fancy typefaces. You have to consider viewing distances in outdoor as you select the type used in the ad. We use large, legible typefaces in all of our outdoor advertising.
- Color: Good contrast is another important aspect in effective outdoor design. The stronger the contrast between the background and copy, the easier it is read from a distance. We commonly use dark text on light backgrounds and light text on dark backgrounds. Research demonstrates that high color contrast can improve out-of-home advertising recall by 38%.
- KISS: The number one rule in billboard design or other OOH advertising is the KISS rule – “Keep It Simple, Silly”. The simpler it is, the more effective it is. Billboard design and OOH advertisements should be straight and to the point. Go with one idea, not many. Billboard and OOH ads are used to help your target customer and deliver a specific message. Don’t cram a lot of information onto a billboard. By keeping the message simple, you’ll get a much better response. Exposure time is typically four to five seconds for your mobile audience. So say it loud, say it proud, but say it clear. Our goal is seven words or less.
